Water Flow Underfloor Heating

Water flow underfloor heating systems provide an efficient, comfortable, and energy-saving way to heat residential and commercial spaces. By circulating warm water through a network of pipes beneath the floor surface, these systems deliver even heat distribution across the entire room, eliminating cold spots and reducing reliance on traditional radiators.

How It Works

A water flow underfloor heating system uses flexible pipes installed within a screed finished surface or beneath the floor structure. Warm water, supplied by a boiler or heat pump, flows through the pipes and gently heats the floor. This creates a consistent indoor temperature while operating at lower water temperatures than conventional heating systems.


During Winter

During the colder months, underfloor heating works by circulating warm water from the heat source through a network of durable pipes installed beneath the floor. The large heated floor surface distributes warmth evenly throughout the room, creating a comfortable indoor environment while maintaining excellent energy efficiency, even in the coldest weather.


During Summer

In warmer months, the same pipework can be used for cooling by circulating chilled water from a ground source heat pump or a compatible air source heat pump with cooling capability. This gently lowers the floor temperature, helping to reduce the room’s radiant heat and create a cooler, more comfortable living or working space without the draughts associated with traditional air conditioning.

Underfloor Heating with Screed Systems

Wet underfloor heating systems achieve the best performance when installed in conjunction with a suitable screed, such as traditional sand and cement or Cemfloor liquid screed. By fully encapsulating the heating pipework, the screed acts as an effective heat conductor, distributing warmth evenly across the entire floor surface. This improves heat transfer, reduces warm-up times, eliminates cold spots, and increases the overall efficiency of the heating system.


Selecting the correct screed type and depth is essential to maximise the performance and longevity of your underfloor heating. Screed that is too thin may not provide adequate coverage or structural strength, while excessive thickness can increase thermal mass and result in slower response times. As a general guide, traditional sand and cement screeds are typically installed at a minimum thickness of around 65mm for bonded domestic applications, increasing to 75mm or more where higher loadings or floating constructions are required. Flowing liquid screeds, such as Cemfloor, can often be installed at reduced depths while still fully encapsulating the pipework, allowing for faster heat transfer, improved responsiveness, and shorter construction programmes.


Every project has its own design requirements, including floor build-up, insulation levels, pipe diameters, and floor finishes. We assess each installation individually to ensure the correct screed specification and minimum cover above the heating pipes are achieved, providing a durable floor construction that delivers maximum comfort, energy efficiency, and long-term performance.

Concrete Milling

If your property already has an existing screed, concrete, or tiled floor, underfloor heating can often be installed without the need for major structural alterations. 

By precision-cutting channels directly into the existing floor, the heating pipework can be neatly integrated without significantly raising the finished floor level or requiring costly excavation and replacement of the existing floor construction.


Using specialist floor milling equipment with high-performance dust extraction, the process is completed with minimal dust and disruption. Before any cutting begins, we carefully plan and mark the pipe layout to ensure the heating system is installed for maximum efficiency and even heat distribution. The milling machine then creates accurately sized channels ready to accommodate the pipework.


Once the channels have been completed and thoroughly cleaned, the underfloor heating pipes are securely installed within the floor before being connected to the manifold and pressure tested. The channels are then filled with a suitable smoothing compound or screed, leaving a solid, level floor ready to receive the chosen floor finish.
